The recovery phrase is used to derive your private keys, which are necessary for spending bitcoin. Jade's [unique security model](https://support.dxp-staging.blockstream.com/blockstream-jade/faqs/how-does-jade-protect-my-recovery-phrase-with-a-blind-oracle) keeps your recovery phrase encrypted on the device, protecting a locked Jade from physical key extraction. > **Tip:** You can also use an uninitialized Jade as a [stateless signing device](https://support.dxp-staging.blockstream.com/blockstream-jade/add-more-security-functionality/use-jade-as-a-stateless-signing-device). 1. Turn on Jade by plugging it in or holding the power button. Select **Set Up Jade** and choose your desired **Setup Type**: - **Begin Setup:** Recommended for most users. Choose your **Setup Method**: - **Create New Wallet:** Generate a new recovery phrase for an unused wallet. - [**Restore Wallet**](https://support.dxp-staging.blockstream.com/blockstream-jade/set-up-transact-recover-your-wallet/restore-recovery-phrase-to-jade)**:** Enter an existing recovery phrase for a previously used hardware device or software wallet. > **Note:** If your recovery phrase was originally created on a phone or computer app, restoring it on Jade gives you hardware signing but does not change the security of the phrase itself. Write down and protect your recovery phrase offline. **Do not take a picture or store online**. Verify your backup by selecting the correct word from your phrase. > **Warning:** Your recovery phrase grants access to your wallet. To finalize your Jade setup, you must connect to a companion app via **USB**, **Bluetooth**, or **QR**.
